Owen Jeered, Anfield Cheered

"Michael Owen spent most of his homecoming watching the team he left produce a display of crushing efficiency as Liverpool beat Newcastle 2-0 at Anfield."
- Soccernet.com

Michael Owen retreated ashen faced to Tyneside last night with the jeers of those who once adored him haunting his thoughts and defeat chilling his soul.
- Guardian Unlimited Football

As much as I wish Owen came back to Liverpool in the summer, he didn't, and so he came back to Anfield last night as a Newcastle player, to boos and jeers.

Now, I don't think he deserved those jeers.

After all, come on people, it's not as if he scored. In fact, it's not as if he did ANYTHING at all. Carragher and Hyypia smothered him out brilliantly, and he didn't get much service from his teammates either.

No service, no goals. Sorry Mikey. Now don't you wish you had some of those crossess that were being pinged to Morientes and Crouch instead?

Oh well, Mike Owen or not, it's another win for Liverpool. EIGHT consecutive wins AND CLEAN SHEETS in the Premiership. How you like THEM apples huh?

Owen is a great player. But last night he rarely has chance on the ball. Anyway, football is all about playing as a team and Liverpool has that extra edge.

agree, owen shouldn't be booed like the way it happened last night. he gave his all when he was a liverpool player, but some fans just don't get it.

another good show from liverpool, yay! next up, everton, and man i hope they stick to their recent form, hahaha...

Crouch should have gotten a red card last night; Bowyer's tackle only deserved a yellow.

The Merseyside derby tomorrow should be fun. I might just put money on a draw. *pphhbbbbbtttttt*

funny how the only recent former players that have come back to anfield in opposing colours have been the ones that went to Real Madrid.....

... the ones that were jeered, that is...

i was surprised at the jeering too. i remember fowler getting a good reception when he returned with leeds. maybe it was the manner of his departure... oh well, another win, another flukey goal from crouch. ;)

i liked what the commentators said: of crouch's goals, half were dubious. hmm. anyway, so much for hype. which is why the media should never be believed. WHAT highly-anticipated homecoming?

Poor Owen... he doesn't deserve the jeering. That said... I'm glad we stopped him from having a go on goal. Absolutely brilliant football from the Reds.

Hey, someone pointed me to this blog. Hoorah...good one. I've linked it to my blog, if you don't mind.

Back to Owen..he doesn't deserve the jeers. He did plenty for the Reds when he was around.

I was extremely upset to hear that Owen was booed by the Liverpool fans, although not in the least surprised.

It's funny how sashi mentioned that Owen didn't get the kind of reception that Fowler got. But then again, Owen was never in any way comparable to Fowler for these people. In fact, to them, Owen brought about the end of Fowler's career at Liverpool. They've always disliked Owen because they thought that Fowler was forced to leave because of him.

Anyway, no point talking about it anymore. I am glad he didn't score coz if he did, I don't know what he would've done. But still I wish him all the best at Newcastle and don't be surprised if he same fans who were booing him might be cheering him next season when he scores a hattrick against Newcastle for Liverpool. *Well, if things go as expected anyway*
